With the release of iCloud and an update to Lion recently, a new feature called “Find My Mac” was introduced. We’re all used to “Find My iPhone” for iPhone and iPad, Find My Mac is very similar. I just updated my OS today and was prompted to turn on Find My Mac. I did. I then went to icloud.com to log in to see if it found my Mac. It didn’t. I did a couple google searches to see what the deal was and came up empty. It then dawned on me that maybe I have to Airport turned on (I am hard wired in my office just to make data transfers a little faster). Once I turned on Airport, my Mac became ‘findable’ for Find My Mac on iCloud.com.

Long story short, in order for Find My Mac to work, an internet connection alone is not enough – it seems that it has to be an Airport internet connection.

Good luck!

I recently discovered how to forward text messages on your iOS device. When you are in a text conversation, you can hit the ‘Edit’ button on the top right to allow you to select or check various text messages. Then on the bottom there are options to either ‘delete’ (which I did know about, I just never used), or also ‘forward’. Tapping forward puts that text in a new message that you can send/forward on to someone else.

I would always just copy and paste messages I wanted to forward on, which worked fine, this just makes it quite a bit easier!

Anyone that uses Billings knows how great of a program it is. It lets you easily manage, track time, and invoice all your projects (for more info about Billings, check out their site).

The one major complaint I've had though, is that its database has to live on one machine...unless of course you can sync that database across multiple computers to gain access to all of your company info from all of your computers.

If you are anything like, I've got all different computers I use to manage my work load - my iMac at home, an iMac at my 9 to 5, a MacBook for when I'm on the road, etc. I've been desperate to figure out a way to get my Billings database synchronized across all of my machines so that I can manage, track time, and invoice work from anywhere on any of my various gadgets.

Thank goodness for Dropbox. I tried various syncing solutions, but hands down, the best syncing utility is Dropbox.

There are a few steps to get this up and running properly. TAKE CAUTION, before you begin, make sure you back up your Billings database. While I've had no problems with data loss, you could very easily accidentally delete or overwrite your database info and lose record of all of your work.

First: We want to move our Billings data into our Dropbox folder so that Dropbox begins syncing it. Make sure Billings is not running and navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/

Second: Drag the entire Billings folder to your Dropbox folder and drop it. Dropbox is now in charge of syncing all your data.

Third: Open up Terminal and navigate to your Application Support folder by typing: cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/

Fourth: We are now going to create a symbolic link between our Billings folder from within Dropbox to our Application Support folder (a symbolic link is like the unix version of a shortcut or alias). To do this, type the following in Terminal: ln -s ~/Dropbox/Billings/ ./Billings

Fifth: Just to make sure everything was done properly, navigate your Finder to your Application Support folder and you should see the symbolic-ly linked Billings folder.

Now you have your Billings database calling to your Dropbox folder so you're able to tell any computer that has Billings installed on it to look at your Dropbox folder for the application data as opposed to the Application Support folder. So, next let's set up our second machine.

AGAIN, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACK UPS JUST IN CASE. Say for instance, I want to be able to access by Billings data on my MacBook. First, I have to make sure I have Billings installed on my MacBook. Next, I can navigate to my Application Support folder and delete the Billings folder since I'm going to be pointing Billings to my Dropbox folder for getting the data. At this point, I just have to go back to the third step and repeat steps 3 through 5. Open up Terminal and navigate to Application Support folder by typing: cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/ , then I type: ln -s ~/Dropbox/Billings/ ./Billings to create the symbolic link to your Billings folder within Dropbox. I go back to my Application Support folder and check to make sure the new linked Billings folder is there and I'm good to go. I can now open up Billings and see all of my data.

The explanation may seem convoluted, but it's actually quite simple, leave a comment if anything didn't make sense.

The last IMPORTANT thing to remember is to always Quit Billings when you are finished. If you have it open on two machines, Dropbox will not know which version to listen to when writing data to the database so you cold risk losing information.
